First guided walk at Pasir Ris mangrove for year 2013

The Naked Hermit Crabs are back on the guided walk at Pasir Ris mangrove!
Despite the heavy downpour in the western part of Singapore, it was relatively dry at Pasir Ris Park. On our first guided walk at Pasir Ris mangroves for the year, we had a turnout of about 30 visitors  of various ages. It was heartening to see our past visitors joining us for the same walk again.

It is great to see families bring their children out to experience nature.

On Saturday, 2nd March, 50 visitors of all ages joined us at an outing to Chek Jawa Boardwalk in Pulau Ubin. This marks the first of our monthly free nature walks to Chek Jawa in 2013, and all of us, visitors and guides, had a great time exploring the mangroves and coastal areas together. The best sighting for the day was the Mud Lobster! Visitors in Ria and PY's groups managed to see it in the water down at the boardwalk. What a rare treat it was! Why? Because most of the time, we are only able to TALK about the mud mounds made by the mud lobsters, and 99% of the time, we will NOT be able to SEE the shy creature itself.

The March holidays have started and the school children are out to play.
The Naked Hermit Crabs are organising a free guided walk session on 23 March at the Pasir Ris Park Mangrove boardwalk. It will be a great and educational trip for visitors of all ages.

The walk is suitable for young and adults.

2 Mar (Sat): FREE Chek Jawa boardwalk tour with the Naked Hermit Crabs

The Crabs are back in action after taking a 2-month break to re-charge! The break was good, but it makes us restless and we can't wait to check out Chek Jawa together with our visitors.

Come join us on 2nd March (Saturday)! We welcome small family and friend groups on a 2-hour nature walk along Chek Jawa Boardwalk.

Lots to see at Chek Jawa, especially when accompanied by an experienced guide. There are busy fiddler crabs, slithery snakes, cute mudskippers, placid monitor lizards, fascinating tree-climbing crabs, super spiders. And if we are lucky, who knows, we might spot the Oriental Pied Hornbills among the tall trees, woodpeckers, sharmas, mud crabs, herons feeding on the mudflats, or White-Bellied Sea Eagles soaring in the sky. One can never be sure what one can find, but we know it will be a fun outing.

Cost: The Crabs do not charge for the trip but you will have to pay for the bumboat and taxi rides to get to Chek Jawa.

Fear not! The Naked Hermit Crab is starting a series of guided walk at Pasir Ris mangrove boardwalk this year, beginning with the months of March and April.

Come spent your saturday evening with us as we explore the fascinating mangroves at Pasir Ris Park.

The walk is suitable for young and adults.

2013 - Free Chek Jawa Boardwalk trips on the 1st Saturday of each month

Hi friends! We had a wonderful year in 2012 sharing the magic of Chek Jawa with loads of interesting people. In total, we did 11 outings attended by a total of 420 visitors, guided by 10 volunteers and with 6 students in training from Dunman High. The months with high visitor attendance are in May, June, October and December, each trip recording more than 50 visitors. The other months are slightly 'quieter' averaging 20 to 30 visitors.

What about 2013? We have good news for you! The Crabs are continuing with our Fascinating, Fantastic, Fabulous and FREE Chek Jawa Boardwalk trips! As the years go by, we are still enjoying the monthly outings, and showing the biodiversity of the mangroves, forests and coastal areas of Chek Jawa to our visitors. These public walks have proven to be a real eye-opener to many people who did not know that there is such richness in animal and plant life in Singapore. Keep signing up for our walks, dear visitors. Without you, these walks wouldn't be this fun!

The Crabs are running the December walk at Chek Jawa next week, and I have not even posted the photos from November! Time to stop the procrastination!

So, here goes ..... We had about 35 visitors join us in November (10-Nov). They are mostly families and small groups of friends wanting to learn more about the mangroves in Chek Jawa.

We also had a group of 10 students from the School of Tourism Studies from Temasek Polytechnic join us. Their lecturer sent them to us with the request that we help to explain the biodiversity of plants and animals that still can be found in our natural places. We certainly hope we left some positive impression with them about natural places such as Chek Jawa. We wanted them to know that Singaporeans still care passionately about conservation issues despite the relentless development of our urban areas for economic growth.
