Having a blast at Balik Chek Jawa!

As part of Pesta Ubin, we are glad to celebrate Chek Jawa Open house on 3 Jun (Sat), where volunteers from many groups came together to share about the beauty of Chek Jawa to about 700 visitors in total!

The activity is by the Chek Jawa community, led by the Naked Hermit Crabs with friends of Chek Jawa like NParks Chek Jawa volunteers, TeamSeagrass, Restore Ubin Mangroves (R.U.M) Initiative, NUS Toddycats. We even had some amazing volunteers from the public join us to help make Balik Chek Jawa a success!

Welcome to Balik Chek Jawa!
After a brief introduction about Balik Chek Jawa at the welcome station, visitors could make their way around the boardwalk where volunteer guides were stationed to share about Chek Jawa's amazing wildlife.

One of the highlights of the trip is meeting Joe Lai, The Man who Saved Chek Jawa, along with his fiberglass baby dugong!

Here's a video of Joe giving an explanation about dugongs:
The youngest Chek Jawa volunteer is Halley with his octopus at the station on the coastal boardwalk! Mommy November did the heavy lifting sharing about Chek Jawa's awesome rocky shores, and other ecosystems nearby.

The Ubin Bird Lovers were also stationed at the top of Jejawi tower to point out the shorebirds of Chek Jawa, as well as the birds roosting in the nearby Jejawi tree!
Perfect weather for spotting birds!
The Restore Ubin Mangroves (R.U.M.) Initiative volunteers had posters and mangrove plant specimens at house no.1, as well as a booth in front of the old aquaculture pond. Perfect for explaining how R.U.M. hopes to restore mangroves in Ubin's abandoned aquaculture ponds!

At the Teamseagrass booth, the amazing volunteers shared fun stories about seagrass, and gave away some great seagrass-themed goodies!

Visitors also got to learn about the history of Chek Jawa, which includes the kampungs and the way of life of islanders in the past.
Learning about the old well!
The mangrove boardwalk is also rich in wildlife and plants. Our guides sure shared many interesting stories to the visitors!
What's that over there?

So many plants!
Kids (or the young-at-heart) could also get free 'passports' and collect a stamp from the volunteers at each station!
