Crabs at the Festival of Biodiversity!

President Tony Tan visited the Festival and the Crabs take the opportunity to share about the important aspects of our biodiversity. Heng Pei Yan managed to get a smile out of him by showing him how the dugong leaves a feeding trail in our seagrass meadows.
Mama Crab Wong Ley Kun together with Ivan Kwan also met with the President for a short while. They took the opportunity also to share about the work done by the Naked Hermit Crabs.
The Crabs worked very hard during the Festival to reach out to families, kids and others at VivoCity.

WACKY CRAZY Festival of Biodiversity this weekend!

Dear friends of the Naked Hermit Crabs,

If you're coming to the Festival of Biodiversity held at VivoCity this weekend (13-14 July), do drop by the marine exhibition to say Hello! We'd love to see as many of you come and visit. You'll get to meet lots of people passionate about nature conservation in Singapore.

(photos by Ria Tan)

Many of the volunteers have spent the past few weekends preparing for the festival. There will be beautiful photos to admire, interactive games to play, and lots of information to be shared with you. We had a fantastic Festival of Biodiversity in 2012, and this year, the festival promises to be even more exciting. The venue, VivoCity, is a dream! We simply want to reach out to more people and tell them about the amazing wildlife that we have in Singapore.

Volunteers from the following community will be at the Marine Exhibition of the Festival:

Mangrove Action Squad
Hantu Bloggers
Blue Water Volunteers
Mega Marine Survey
The Leafmonkey Workshop
Wildsingapore
TeamSeagrass
International Coastal Cleanup Singapore
Naked Hermit Crabs

How to spot the nature volunteers this weekend? Easy! We will all be wearing the cutest, wickedest, funniest soft-toy mascots. These mascots represent many of the species of animals that can be found in Singapore. Somehow, I get this warm fuzzy feeling that this is going to be a WACKY CRAZY Celebration of our cherished biodiversity in Singapore! Definitely looking forward to the two days.

Here's a sneak preview of some of the mascots that we made and will be wearing.

So, here are the dates again: 13-14 July (Saturday, Sunday) at VivoCity

More information can be found in the official Festival of Biodiversity website

What we've been up to in May

Whew! What a crazy month!

During the weekend of 24-25 May, the Crabs were at the Envirofest event (at Toa Payoh Hub) together with nearly everyone else from the active nature conservation community of Singapore.

Nature lovers were out in full force to share their work with the members of the public. Doing an exhibition is as important as doing field work. It gives us a platform to reach out to the masses with our message of conservation. Saving habitats, giving a voice to the animals that we try so hard to save cannot be the work of a few individuals in a community. We have to share what we have learnt in all our field trips with ordinary folks. They may not joined us in our field trips but many are no less concerned with issues of nature conservation in Singapore. They are the ones teaching their own children, students, sharing with friends and family. Every effort counts.

Hot naked ones at EnviroFest 2008

The Naked Hermit Crabs had a great time at EnviroFest regardless of the really hot weather :-)
Here's Chay Hoon, Sam and Gaytri at the booth.
Sam shares about our special living shores with the young ones.
Andy explains more to this interested family.

Other groups working hard for the shores were also there. Like Debby and the Hantu Bloggers who conduct dives at our very own wild reefs at Pulau Hantu. The Raffles Museum Toddycats were also kept busy with lots of interest in their specimens of our wildlife.
Especially the pickled baby dugong, apparently the poor thing was inside its mummy when the Mama dugong was killed by a boat propeller. The need to protect our shores is a common message shared by the Toddycats as well as the Crabs and Hantu Bloggers and other groups working for our wild places.

Chay Hoon gave a riveting talk with lots of photos and video clips of our amazing marine life.
And here's a photo of Chay Hoon with Boon Wah who organised this wonderful event. Not only that, Boon Wah was also a winner of the "I Want to go to Cyrene" blogging contest and came with us to Cyrene recently. She did a lovely poster of the trip and displayed it at EnvironFest 2008!
Many thanks to Boon Wah and her able team for organising this wonderful event and making it possible for us to share about our shores with so many people!

Also thanks to all the Naked ones who came to share at EnviroFest: Sam, Kenerf, Gaytri, YC, Liana, Chay Hoon, Andy and July.

More about EnviroFest on the wildfilms blog day 1 and day 2.

The Naked Hermit Crabs will host a photo exhibition of our shores featuring Cyrene Reef as well as our other shores at our booth at EnviroFest 2008. Lots of photos of our shores, and happy Crabs to share stories about them.
"Singapore shores: Got things to see meh?"
Our very own Crab, Ms Toh Chay Hoon will also be giving this talk about our shores on 29 Jun (Sun) 2.30pm at the event. Come and find out more about shores above and underwater as Chay Hoon shares photos and stories about our wonderful marine life.

About Chay Hoon
An indefatigable intertidal explorer as well as diver, Chay Hoon has probably been to every Singapore shore that is possible to reach. She has an uncanny eye for spotting the most marvellous marinelife no matter how tiny or well camouflaged they are. She is a volunteer guide on the shores of Chek Jawa, Pulau Semakau, Sentosa as well as the Chek Jawa boardwalk. She also regularly dives our reefs with the Hantu Bloggers. She participates in scientific monitoring of our shores as a member of TeamSeagrass and the Blue Water Volunteer ReefFriends underwater survey programme. She is also a pioneer member of wildfilms

Double A RE-live event at Atrium@ Orchard

Last week, in the midst of all the scurrying, some crabs had set up a booth at Atrium@Orchard (next to Plaza Singapura) for the event ' Double A RE-live'. The opening ceremony was graced by Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports & Ministry of Transport, Mr Teo Ser Luck. He presented all the participating NGOs a token of appreciation.

The opening ceremony also highlighted how contagious our name was. After inviting the 'Naked hermit crabs' up to the stage to collect the token of appreciation, the MC had invited up next the 'Naked trekkers' instead of Nature trekkers group!

After the ceremony, Mr Teo visited our booth and listened intently to what we had to share.

We presented him a poster of the Southern shores of Singapore and extended our invitation to him to join the Naked Hermit Crabs at Cyrene Reef.

We were also encouraged by other members of the public who came by our booth. Some of them were already on our Cyrene Reef face book. We had wannabe-guides as well as a teacher who was excited to bring her primary school students for a guided walk at Chek Java due to her soft spot for Pulau Ubin.

The Double A RE-live Event's exhibition is still open for public viewing until the 15th of June from 12 noon to 9pm. So do come by with your friends and family to the Atrium@Orchard and pick up tips on how to RE-live.
